REMOTE ACCESS TO THE CLONARD COLLEGE NETWORK

Clonard College uses a gateway device to allow remote access to resources on the college network.

There are two types of remote access available for most members of the college community.

REMOTE FILE SERVICES (RFS)

Clonard staff and students can use Remote File Services (RFS) to access shared folders on the Clonard network as if they were physically located at Clonard and logged on to a school computer. The level of access to file and folder resources is exactly the same as that normally available at Clonard.

RFS allows remote users to view resources on the college network but is most useful as a transfer mechanism. Staff may like to collect a resource from the college network, edit it locally, and then return it to its former location for others to access. Students might use RFS to "upload" a related folder of resources - a website or project folio, for example - which they have been compiling at home.

INTRANET ACCESS

Currently under investigation, the gateway device also promises to provide access to our intranet portal from beyond the college. When this service has been enabled and tested, staff, students, and - eventually, parents and families - will be able to interact with the intranet as they would here, at Clonard.

Students will be able to collect curriculum resources, read announcements, send and receive messages, complete surveys, and submit work. Staff will be able to undertake similar tasks as well as make on-line bookings, post announcements and resources, and enter details of student attendance and assessment. Parents will have the opportunity to review curriculum material, student work, and assessment advice, and communicate with teachers.

As this aspect of our remote access solution is developed, it will be further documented, here.
